Xavier A. Gutierrez serves as Managing Director at Clearlake Capital Group focusing on operations, strategic development, and investor client servicing and outreach. Mr. Gutierrez is based in the firm’s Santa Monica, California headquarters and is a member and contributor to Clearlake’s Executive Committee and Investment Committee. Mr. Gutierrez has a 20+year career focused on investment management, corporate strategy & operations, finance, business development, and the institutional capital markets. 

Previously, Mr. Gutierrez served as Chief Investment Officer of Meruelo Group, the family office of US Latino business executive Alex Meruelo, and President & Chief Investment Officer of Meruelo Investment Partners, the firm’s investment affiliate. At Meruelo Group, Mr. Gutierrez oversaw investments and acquisitions, and was responsible for deal origination, underwriting, execution, and capital sourcing. He also helped lead the strategic management of 35+ portfolio companies across industries including: Banking & Financial Services; Hospitality & Gaming; Media; Infrastructure; Restaurant & Food Services; Real Estate; Public Equity; and Private Equity.

Prior to Meruelo Group, Mr. Gutierrez was Principal & Managing Director with Phoenix Realty Group, a national real estate private equity firm managing approximately $1 billion in institutional capital from leading public pension funds, banks and insurance companies. In addition, Mr. Gutierrez has held positions with the law firm of Latham & Watkins working with private equity and venture capital funds, worked as a financial analyst with the investment bank Lehman Brothers, and worked as a financial analyst in the League Office of the National Football League. 

Mr. Gutierrez currently serves as a voting member of the United States Securities Exchange Commission Advisory Committee on Small and Emerging Companies, which provides a formal mechanism for the SEC to receive advice and recommendations on privately held small businesses and publicly traded companies with a market capitalization less than $250 million.

In addition, Mr. Gutierrez currently serves on the Board of Directors of Commercial Bank of California (CBC), and its publicly traded bank holding company, NCAL Bancorp (OTC: NCAL). CBC is a full-service commercial bank based in Los Angeles/Orange County, with approximately $1 billion in assets, making it the largest Latino-owned bank in the State of California. On the CBC Board, Mr. Gutierrez serves as the Chairman of the Asset Liability Committee, the Strategic and Business Development Committee, and is on the Director’s Credit Committee, the Audit Committee, and the Community Reinvestment Act Committee. CBC merged with National Bank of California (NBC) in May 2016, and is the surviving subsidiary of NCAL Bancorp. Mr. Gutierrez had previously served on the Board of Directors of NBC, including serving as the Chairman of the Audit Committee.

Furthermore, Mr. Gutierrez currently serves on the Advisory Board for Artemis Real Estate Partners, a women-owned private equity real estate investment manager founded by former US Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker.

Previously, Mr. Gutierrez served on the Board of Directors, and was the Compensation Committee Chair of Sizmek, Inc. (formerly NASDAQ: SZMK), an advertising technology company that fuels digital advertising campaigns and connects 20,000 advertisers and over 5,000 agencies to audiences around the world. Sizmek was acquired and taken private by Vector Capital, a $3 billion+ technology-focused private equity firm, in October 2016.

Mr. Gutierrez has been very active with a number of non-profit, academic, and philanthropic organizations. Currently, Mr. Gutierrez serves on the Board of Trustees for Southern California Public Radio (SCPR), a member-supported public radio network that that reaches more than 700,000 listeners every week, and is the most listened-to public radio news service of any kind in Southern California. SCPR's flagship station, KPCC 89.3 FM, has garnered more than 300 journalistic honors since 1999, more than all of the other radio stations in Los Angeles combined. In addition, Mr. Gutierrez serves on the Advisory Council for the Hispanic Scholarship Fund, the national organization focused on providing financial support for US Latinos to pursue higher education. 

Previously, Mr. Gutierrez served on the Board of Directors of the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (USHCC), the national organization dedicated to supporting and promoting the 4-million+ Hispanic/Latino-owned businesses in the United States. In addition, Mr. Gutierrez also previously served on the Board of Regents of Loyola Marymount University (Los Angeles, CA), the Board of the Harvard Club of Southern California, the Stanford Law School Board of Visitors, and the Young Alumni Committee of the Harvard Alumni Association. Mr. Gutierrez also previously served on the Executive Committee for the Los Angeles District Council of the Urban Land Institute (ULI), was Co-Chair of New Programs for the Pension Real Estate Association (PREA), was on the Advisory Board for the Ross Program in Real Estate at the USC Lusk Center for Real Estate, was a Board Director of the East Los Angeles Community Corporation (ELACC), and was a member of the Construction Services Committee for the City of Los Angeles.

Mr. Gutierrez received his Bachelor of Arts in Government cum laude from Harvard University, and his Juris Doctorate from Stanford Law School. Mr. Gutierrez lives with his wife and son in Los Angeles, California.
